Mitsukoshi Theater
ABOUT
Facilities attraction
The Mitsukoshi Theater opened in 1927 on the 6th floor of Mitsukoshi's flagship store in Nihonbashi, making it the world's first live theater venue to be located in a department store. Originally called the Mitsukoshi Hall, the theater was created as part of the rebuilding of Mitsukoshi's Nihonbashi location, which had sustained significant damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, reflecting the owner's wish for a revival that was "not only architectural, but cultural." Since opening, the theater has been used most notably as a venue for events such as traditional Japanese music recitals, dance performances, concerts, and lectures. Businesses have also used the theater as a high-class meeting place at which to entertain their clients. The Mitsukoshi Theater features a stage with a proscenium arch measuring approximately 12 meters (or 6 ken in traditional Japanese measurements) from side to side and 6 meters (3 ken) from front to back, while the theater's interior design incorporates several different styles of ornaments.
