Traditional Performing Arts

Performances of traditional art forms such as Noh, kyogen (a form of comic theater), and Japanese dance take place every day at Suigian. Every day, the stage at Suigian hosts performances from the leading schools of the traditional Japanese performing arts. These include the five schools of Noh theater, all of the schools of Noh music, the two schools of kyogen, the Inoue school of Kyoto dance, the Hanayagi and Fujima schools of Japanese dance, the Miyagi school of Ryukyu dance, and the Ikenobo school of ikebana, as well as bunraku (Japanese puppetry) and gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) performances.

Traditional Japanese Interior

Suigian's central interior feature is a stage measuring 3 square ken (approximately 5.4 square meters), with a traditional symbolic Noh backdrop painted by a disciple of the famed Kano school. The interior also incorporates elements of Japan's exquisite traditional crafts, creating a stylish, bewitching, classically Japanese space. Meals are served on subtly gorgeous tableware, including antique lacquerware and serving trays from the Edo (1603–1868), Meiji (1868–1912), and Taisho (1912–1926) eras. A uniquely Japanese space distinguished by beautiful furnishings, Suigian is a place where you can leave the everyday behind and immerse yourself in a moment of sublime relaxation.

Culinary Pleasures

Serving up an authentic Japanese culinary experience for all five senses, the menu at Suigian features items including tea from Fukujuen of Kyoto, a protector and purveyor of Japanese tea culture for over 200 years; and desserts from the venerable traditional Kyoto confectioners Oimatsu and Kamesuehiro. The beverage menu features selections by actor and noted food and wine connoisseur Takuro Tatsumi.
